A 1950s Hetchins.

Henry received a very old Hetchins frame, as a gift, in Reynolds 531 steel tubing with curly stays - a piece of English cycles history.

When he came to us, the frame was cracked and the paint badly retouched, with even wrong decals, this poor bike was crying for help.

After a proper restoration, with original paint and period decals, we finished it with new and new-old-stock top notch components so this beauty will easily carry on into the 2050s and beyond.

Happy Cycling Henry!

Woman of steel goes Ironman!

In this time of exciting victories and gold medals - thank you once again, Super-Wiggo, for your incredible success yesterday - we'd like to tell a story of another racer: Lisa Jones.

Lisa commissioned her made to measure Racer Rosa bike earlier this year; a racer with triathlon geometry which could also take her for touring rides around Europe. She was so happy with the fit that she instantly began shaving minutes off her triathlon personal best times.

In June Lisa did the amazing "Land’s End to John O’Groats" , a 12 day ride, for a cumulative 1604Km in 61 hours, raising over £3,500 of charity for The Alzheimer's Society... and that was just her training for the IRONMAN UK Triathlon!

As part of her Ironman program, Lisa was back through Racer Rosa doors again to prepare her purple machine with a more 'racy' set-up - a higher gears cassette combined with a racing style hand-built wheelset, using DT-Swiss rims and Royce Titanium hubs.

This year the Ironman UK Triathlon was held in Bolton, on 22 July. It was a 2.4-mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run, raced in that order and without a break. Well, we're very, very proud to say that Lisa won her age group with a time of 11:50:17, qualifying for a Kona slot (World Championships in October).

The funny thing is that she keeps being asked: "why do you ride an old bike?", and "wow, and you did it on a steel bike?"... lots of people still don't realize that there is nothing 'retro' or revivalistic about steel. It is a modern material, lightweight and today it makes sense for a number of reasons, like: comfort, best ride offered, classic style and lifetime durability (which, if you're not a professional who can change carbon fibre bike every season, is a very important factor!).... but we know that the industry is changing and finally many people are coming around to the idea that classic steel is the NEW material!

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS LISA!

30 MARCH 2012

A brilliant weekend

We're now back on our feet, after an amazing weekend at the Bespoked Bristol Show. What a great show, we are happy to have been amongst so many fantastic manufacturers, and knowledgeable, appreciative public
.

We had a great response from the over 5,000 visitors and lost our voices talking to people. The most recurrent words we heard were: "clean lines" and "beautiful, elegant designs", but also our trademark Lombardi blue was very successful.

Many congratulations to Mark, who's the lucky winner of our little competition. He wins one of the components we had on display at the show.

Here are a few photo of our little stand and hope to see many of you at the 2013 show next year!

This Season's Colours

Racer Rosa Bicycles News 1Our customers can select from over 200 colours on the RAL chart, it’s a dazzling choice and can be a tricky decision. Our trademark Lombardi blue is popular across all the seasons, but we notice a definite trend towards some colours, in the different seasons. With spring in the air, we can definitely now see the beginning of this seasonal switch in choice.

Above you can see a selection of colours from the last few wintery months. Green has been very popular, we’ve made frames in cool mint, a smart racing green and a zingy apple. A Hot reds, oranges and yellows are also a la mode and make a cheerful sight cycling through London’s grey streets. But also classic monochrome; either sleek French navy, all back, or a white frame teamed with black accessories looks both sporty and smart.

7 FEBRUARY 2012

The years of bicycles

The festivities went quickly and we're already busy building the first projects of the new year.... some people say that 2012 is going to be the year of the bike - i.e. in this
Guardian's article - and it certainly looks that way, judging from the number of new orders we received in January.

But here we want stop for a moment and look back at a successful 2011. It was a very good year and we think we're lucky to have had so many lovely clients - we really did meet some great people and wish to thank them all, firstly for choosing us, and secondly for giving such spontaneous, enthusiastic feedback about their made to measure Racer Rosa bikes.

Here are a few quotes and below, a few pics of the latest most relevant projects:

Kate: "I am one very happy customer! I’m completely delighted with my bike, it's beautiful and I never knew cycling was so easy! I’ve just cycled into work on a very familiar route and it was so different from when I was on my old bike. I couldn’t be happier with it!"

Torben: "I'm very happy with the bike, it's very comfortable - very little road buzz - immediately a faster, more comfortable position on the bike - my knees and lower back are no longer sore at the end of the week… It's responsive under acceleration, very little flex noticeable. The handling is great - descents can be taken at speed as the ride is precise and it soaks up any bumps pretty well, not twitchy or nervous (like the carbon frame). Aestheticly - looks great!"

Mark: "I'm having a great time on the bike and everyone who sees it seems to love it. I was in London this week and I reckon did about 80 or 90km during the week. A couple of early morning spins up and around Regent's Park (putting the wind up a few riders on their modern machines!) and I've been commuting and travelling to meetings on her quite a bit. She runs absolutely perfectly."

Paul: "I have a few hundred miles on my fantastic new bike under my belt, and am delighted with the choice I made. Many thanks to you and please pass on my compliments to Antonio for an exceptional creation which I enjoy every day."

Dale: "Thank you so much for the wonderful frame that I picked up this Sunday. Also for your careful preparation of the headset and forks. Really pleased with the finished frame. The finish is very tactile and could you please relay my thanks to Antonio. It is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life."

Michael: "I’ve just done about 15k to see how the bike with the new frame goes. I’m very pleased with it. I noticed immediately that I can get more power down and a couple of hills that I regularly tackle seemed easier even though I haven’t ridden since leaving the bike with you. Also the steering is more responsive when wiggling through narrow spaces. Arms and shoulders ache has completely gone."

John: "I took the bike out for a ride in Essex on Sunday, did 100km in about 3 hours. The bike felt very good, I noticed myself concentrating on the road and my riding rather than the bike which is excellent for only three hours in on a new bike."

Rich: "The bike is amazing. It flies like a dream and this morning, going to work, I reached 26mph, leaving many carbon-fibre riders behind!"

30 JANUARY 2012

A date for your diaries.

This year
Bespoked Bristol - the handmade bicycle show - will be at a bigger venue, due to popular demand and the great success of last year. It will be held on the weekend of 23-25 March and the good news is that we are going to be there too, amongst many other fantastic bicycle makers, i.e. Roberts, Mercian, Viner, Pegoretti and Tommasini.

There will also be many emerging frame builders showing their excellent work; a new generation of British frame makers that we are following with interest and who deserve proper exposure. All very promising - we are sure it will be a very exciting show, not least with the presence of "Look mum no hands!" coffee.

We hope to meet you all there. The show is definitely worth the ticket entry price. Tickets are already on sale on the Bespoked Bristol website!
